Why is My Schlage Lock Draining Battery Important?

The weak Wi-Fi signal strength can cause your Schlage Encode Lock to drain its batteries quickly.

Since the lock has built-in Wi-Fi, it tries to maintain the connection to your home Wi-Fi network—and if your network signal is weak; the lock may be forced to continuously search/reconnect to it, hence putting a strain on the batteries.

If you work too hard, your Schlage Encode Lock battery will quickly run out. The main reason your Schlage Encode batteries die fast is because they are overworked.

1. Check Enhance Your Wi-Fi Network Signal

Your Schlage Encode batteries can be put under strain by weak Wi-Fi signals. This usually causes them to drain quickly. This is because the lock uses more power to maintain a connection to your (weak/unstable network signal).

To check if your signal strength is low, open Schlage Home App. To improve signal strength, move your router closer to the lock.

A Wi-Fi extender can be used to improve signal strength if your router is moved from its current location.

This will allow your Schlage Encode to connect to your Wi Fi network easily without having the battery overworked.

2. If your router isn’t active, disconnect your lock and connect it to your network

The same effect can be had by not disconnecting your lock when your router is turned off. That is, if your home Wi-Fi is turned off but your lock isn’t disconnected from it at the time, the lock will continue to search for a Wi-Fi signal to connect to, and this uses more battery power than normal.

So you can reduce excessive battery usage by disconnecting your Schlage Encode lock from your home Wi-Fi when it’s turned off.

Schlage Encode (and virtually all Schlage smart locks) uses non-rechargeable alkaline batteries—Schlage doesn’t recommend using lithium or any type of rechargeable batteries.

4. Reset the Lock

If the problem persists, you can reset your lock to correct the bug. Yes, resetting the Schlage Encode Smart Lock, for the most part, is a go-to solution for most problems you’re having with the lock.

Resetting your lock will reset all settings. All User Codes, including Schlage Home integration settings, will be deleted. So you’ll have to program your lock again like you did when it was just installed.

That said, here’s how to reset your Schlage Encode Lock:

  • Step 1: Press and hold the Reset button on your lock (a black circle button located on the interior assembly—you’ll have to remove the battery cover to find it). The lock will flash red.
  • Step 2Hold the Reset button for at least 30 seconds until the lock flashes red. Next, the lock will flash a solid light blue. This indicates that the reset has succeeded.

Your lock has been reset. This should resolve the battery performance issue. Contact Schlage Customer Support if your lock does not work. They may recommend a fix or replace the lock if it doesn’t work.
