PETG Not Sticking To Bed: Different Solutions Explained


You can’t get more joy than printing an object from a 3D printer using PETG filament.

You can make things with all your skills like smartphone holders and 3D printer replacement parts, clamps or hinges, as well as shelving brackets.

But what happens if something goes wrong. PETG not sticking to its bed properly

What will your next move be?

Don’t worry. This is a common problem with this material. There are many reasons for it.

The reasons are varied, so the solutions might be different. This is what I’ll explain here.

What is PETG?

PETG stands for PETG. Polyethylene Terephthalate With a glycol modifior. It is one of most used polymers.

Take a look at any kind of clear plastic bottle or food packaging, there’s a high chance that it’s constructed with the material Polyethylene Terephthalate.

The extra-G, i.e. Glycol makes 3D printing structural components easy by making them easier to print. You get more flexibility and impact resistance with less hazing and brittleness.

PETG is a great 3D printing filament. It is strong enough to print any shape object. It can withstand high-strength environments and low-heat.

PETG is a combination of ABS and PLA. You will have the benefits of multiple materials in one. Its ductility characteristics can be used to create flexible geometry-like objects.

Pros:

  • It is extremely durable and warp-resistant. So, you won’t be fretting about the objects falling off over the build plate.
  • Very sticky. It will stick to the bed even if you use PETG filament with textured PEI sheets.
  • UV resistant. 3D printed objects can be taken outside and exposed to the sun. The object will still be strong.
  • Odorless. It does not emit harmful gas elements when printing, so there won’t be any smell.

Cons:

  • Blobs or zits. Sometimes, the outer print can be covered with random zits. You can fix this by setting the flow rate correctly.
  • Stringing. If the setting is not correct, PETG will help you.
  • Stickiness. Stickiness. The filament is very sticky by nature and can make it difficult to separate the plates from the prints. You can remove it by spraying your hair with a hair spray.
  • Absorbs water. PETG might not adhere to the bed well due to this.

What should you do if PETG Filament doesn’t stick to your bed?

1. Get the Temperature Just Right

PETG will not adhere if the temperature is set incorrectly. If you set the temp too high, it’ll be prone to stringing and oozing. It is possible for the material to crack and fall if it is set too low.

However, the temperature varies accordingly with the type of extruders, brand of printers and filament you’re using. For example, hot filaments should be able to work better with a higher temperature nozzle and build plate.

Typically for the nozzle, the recommended range of temperature is between 230°C and 250°C. So, I would suggest you start with 230°C. Play around with 5°C higher or lower unless you successfully get the perfect print quality.

As for the build plate, adjust the setting between 70° and 100°. Before using filament, ensure that the bed is preheated for at least 10 minutes. This will ensure that the bed heats evenly and raises the ambient temperature to prevent warping.

2. Modify the Fan Settings Correctly

The speed of the fan is a major factor in determining adhesive properties. If you don’t adjust the fan right, sticky threads and blobs will form when the material cools down. PETG will not reach your print bed through the nozzle.

The rule is to keep the fan off while printing the first three layers PETG. This will allow the interlayer to stick better to the PETG at a higher temp.

If the fan blows too loudly during the initial stage, the material will freeze and the layers will not hold well. Infills could be trapped and corners would not be cleaned.

Turn the fan on and print the fourth or fifth layer at 30% speed. This will ensure the material stays securely on the blade and that the final object doesn’t become very soft.

Increase speed to 50% to print bridges, get more details, have shorter layers or have extreme overhangs.

3. Find the right plate material

The 3D printer will always create a layer of material on top of the previous layer. The first layer must be printed correctly. Each layer must bond well in order to get the correct structure. Otherwise, the object could warp or fall apart. This will also cause the layers below to not stick well. 

Make sure to choose the correct plate material if you want the first layer to be clean. Five options are my top picks out of many.

A. Normal Glass

For 3D printing, glass materials usually have a glossy smooth finish. The material is very stiff and flat, and it doesn’t warp over time. Because it is dense and has low thermal conductivity, heating it up takes longer. This is a good thing for printing, as it spreads heat more evenly over the build area.

Mirror tiles and borosilicate are two of the most common types of glass used for building plates.

When it comes to PETG bed adhesion, pair the glass with adhesives like hairspray, glue stick or painter’s tape. They all help the bottom layer stick perfectly and smoothly.

B. Polyetherimide

Polyetherimide (or PEI) is a flexible, textured material that can be used to make different types of filament. It is strong enough to hold 3D-printed objects together and has a smooth finish. You don’t even need any kind of adhesive for PEI. So, it’s a very hassle-free option to pick. 

It boasts incredible mechanical properties, including high or low temperature resistance, high wear resistance and radiation resistance. You’ll also find the plate in different colors.

To get it to stick you might have to smoosh your first layer. It will pop off easily once the object cools down.

C. BuildTak

This is a flexible option. It can be used as a multipurpose sheet and has an adhesive back that you can easily peel off to stick to the bed.

After you are done printing, you can easily remove the image from the sheet and clean it.

BuildTak is a great FDM 3D printer. It provides a smooth 3D printing experience. The best thing about the build plate is that PETG will stick well to it.

A magnetic base can be placed on top of the BuildTak Sheet to protect the print bed. Both sheets will be connected well and can be removed from the bed with ease.

D. Garolite

Garolite is a fiberglass or epoxy laminate. This surface doesn’t require any adhesive substance. It can be used without heating the bed.

Garolite build plates are available on high-end 3D printers. They prevent PETG from becoming warped. This type of texture can make it difficult for filament to stick to.

Although it’s not very popular, you would find it great.

E. Easy-Peelzy

It has a flexible adhesive. It allows you to first peel the magnetic base’s build surface off and then peel it from the bottom.

One amazing factor is that it’s very child-friendly. Your kid doesn’t need any advanced tools to remove the prints. Plus, it doesn’t have any sharp edges or spring steel to deal with.

4. Correct the Print Speed

Different types of PETG filament will have different print speeds. This is due to the fact that each filament has its own properties.

The recommended speed is 60 to 120 mm/s. If you go too slow, you’ll have stringing, oozing and deformed parts. But going too fast can lead to poor layer adhesion, extruder skipping, and low quality print quality.

To avoid this, I recommend starting with 20-25 mm/s for the exterior wall and the first layer. Then gradually increase it. This depends on the filament.

The following setting may result in a good print quality:

5. Correct the Nozzle Spacing

You should ensure that there is a greater distance between the nozzle & the print bed. The ideal distance between the nozzle and the print bed is 0.1mm. It’s the thickness of an index card or 2 pieces of paper.

If the nozzle is set too close, the flow won’t go smooth and can cause the nozzle to jam. If you set it too far, the PETG won’t stick to the heated bed.

You can match the gap with an index card to get the best result.

6. Get the Retraction Right

One common problem with the PETG is that it can get very “stringy”. It happens when the PETG nozzle moves around the area and prints another portion of the object.

Even though the nozzle doesn’t push the PETG out, its sticky nature makes it pull the remaining filament to cause stringiness across other parts of the object.

You can fix this problem by setting the Retraction setting correctly. It pulls a small amount of PETG back into nozzle before changing layers or moving them.

The right setting will allow you to reduce stringing effects by a lot.

I recommend setting the retraction speed to approximately 50 mm/s. If damage occurs, you can decrease slowly. The initial distance should be 5mm. However, you can adjust the distance by 1mm if necessary.

7. Keep the PETG Dry

PETG is a highly hygroscopic material. It easily absorbs moisture from air when you leave it outside and hydrolyses when it’s wet. PETG will not adhere to the print bed properly because of the weaker interlayer bonding.

It is important to avoid exposing the filament to high temperatures or fluctuations of temperature. Otherwise, it will become brittle and dissolve.

While it is impossible to change the material’s characteristics, there are two ways you can eliminate them. First one is dehydrating the filament roll in an oven at 60°C for around 6 hours.

Second, store the filament roll in an airtight plastic container with lots deiccant and keep it there for 24 hours. This is a great place to store silica gel or dried beads. They help to keep the humidity in the box from getting too high.

There are several storage options available that will help keep the filament from drying out. One such storage is the following: SUNLU dryer box. It allows you to adjust the temperature according to the 3D filament type. It is lightweight and simple to use, making it easy to carry.

8. Filament of High Quality

One of the major reasons why PETG isn’t sticking. Low-quality filament can lead to poor adhesion. I recommend using the highest quality filament. OVERTURE PETG Filament Or AMOLEN PETG Filament. Both are 1.75mm wide and weigh 1kg.

A. A.

This product is guaranteed to be free from clogs and bubbles, so you can enjoy a smooth 3D printing experience. It is also very impact-resistant. This would be a great choice if you want spark in your object.

B. AMOLEN PETG Filament

The filament won’t have any jam, bubbles, or warp issues. It promises to melt quickly and flow smoothly. This filament will allow you to make the exact shape you want. Not just that, it’s compatible with a variety of 3D printers.

9. Keep the Print Bed Clean

It’s normal that frequent use of the printer will cause deposits to form on the bed, particularly when you heat it.

High temperatures can cause filament to stick to the surface. So, when you remove any object after you’re done with the print, it may leave residue on the bed. This could cause poor adhesion for your next project.

To avoid this situation, it’s important to inspect the bed after each use. If it is stained or dirty, you should immediately clean it.

Some of the methods are:

A. Dishwashing liquid and water

If your bed is dirty, you can simply dampen the cloth with dishwashing detergent and water and then clean it. Make sure your bed isn’t hot during the process.

I find Dawn Dish Soap Ultra Dishwashing Liquid It is very efficient in this instance. It can easily remove light dust.

B. Glass Cleaner

If you’re using glass bed, then glass cleaner would be simply great. Simply apply the cleaner and leave it. Then, wipe it with a dry towel. It will not only remove grease stains, but also adhesive remnants.

This Seventh Generation Cleaner It’s a great choice. It’s tough on grease and dirt and cleans the glass very well.

C. Isopropanol

Isopropanol can be used to clean the most stubborn adhesives. So, it ensures incredible results. During this process, the print bed must be kept cool.

It is important to note that the Isopropanol compound evaporates very quickly. For cleaning, use a soft sponge. This will make it easier to remove the stain.

Make sure to use 99% solution if you don’t want any sign of streaks on the bed.

You can even consider having Solimo 99% Isopropyl Alcohol For the job. Each 16 fl. oz. set comes with the product. It can remove even the most stubborn stain.

Final words

Before you try to solve the problem, you need to identify the exact reason your pet dog is not sticking to the bed.

It could be low-quality filament or an incorrect temperature setting, incorrect distance from the nozzle, or other reasons.
