1986 was the year Joe Traeger created Traeger pellet smokers. They have maintained their position as the “The” since then. top-rated pellet grill brand, even till now. Let’s get a bit into details.

How did the company start?

Traeger has been around a while, creating and selling one the best. best pellet smokers All over the world. I find the brand story fascinating.

Joe Traeger, Jerry Whitfield and others experimented with wood pellet stoves decades ago.

Joe Traeger invented the pellet smoker in 1985. It was patented in 1986. Traeger remained the only pellet grill manufacturer on the market for over two decades.

Their pellet grills were however very basic back then. They used the basic LMH controller type. LMH is for low heat. Medium heat and high heat.

Traeger was however a family-owned business.

In 2006, the original patent expired. This is when new pellet smoker manufacturers start to appear on the market. Surprisingly we now have over 24 pellet grills businesses. Jeremy Andrus joined Traeger as a partner in the same year and had the business moved from Salt Lake City to Traeger.

Traeger is still the leading pellet grill manufacturer. I looked at their statistics and found that they sell pellet grills worth over $300 million annually.

Traeger made sure that Traeger knew that all of their residential grills are made in China, while larger models are made in the U.S. Many people don’t like the fact that Traeger manufactures their grills in China. However, there are other pellet smokers made in China.

Types Of Traeger Pellet Grills

It’s important to understand that not only does the Traeger grill come in a different model, you can also find the different models in 4 basic lines. Don’t get too confused; here’s what I mean. Traeger makes four basic types of pellet grills. Before you buy a grill, it is important to fully understand these lines.

You must also decide whether you want to purchase the latest model or simply go for an older model. That’s because the market is stock with various old Traeger models. Here are the Traeger pellet grills lineup.

Traeger Pro series

This is the most popular model in the line-up. This grill has Wi-Fi connectivity, which allows you to connect to your Traeger app.

Traeger Ironwood Series

This is the Pro Series’ advanced version. The Pro series is slightly larger in size. You can also expect advanced smart tech features such as the TRU connection, which helps increase your cooking time.

Trust me, these versions are super-techy.

There’s also the super smoke mode; with this smart feature, push a button, and your smoke is ramped up.

Traeger Timberline Series

The largest option is here. There are two options for cooking space: the 850 or 1300 square inches. These two options are available. The app also allows you to measure your pellet levels.

Okay, don’t expect much smart tech feature here. This range is all about portability. Hope you understand?

Also, I want you to know that the numbers you see on Traeger’s product imply the number of cooking surface areas. Pro 780, for example, has a cooking surface area of 780 square inches.

In older models, the reverse is true. The name indicates the size. For example, the pro series 37 comes with a grilling rack of 37″ × 19.

I love the 575. I cook for 5. But… if I had it to do over again. I would do it bigger: Traeger PRO 780.

I’m starting this best Traeger pellet smoker review with this model because it’s the most popular in the Traeger series. When I checked on AmazonIt is available in two sizes, and two colors.

It comes in two sizes: 575 and 780 square feet. But I’m reviewing the 575 inches here. You can cook up to four chickens in the 575-square-inch area.

I was immediately struck by the Traeger pellet-grill’s beautiful appearance. The grill’s black color has a great profile with a barrel-shaped design.

It comes with a sawhorse-style, undercarriage which makes it durable and eliminates any doubts about the stability.

The wheel design looks great too. You can roll the pellet grill to any desired smoking spot.

This unit’s entire body section is made from stainless steel. What does that mean? The unit is durable, and can retain more heat.

I looked under the lid and found that the grates were made of porcelain-coated steel. This ensures heat distribution is correct and makes it easy to clean.

The total area of the Traeger pellet barbecue is 572 sq. In. There are approximately 418 sq. The primary area was 418 sq. The primary area took 418, while the upper rack holds the remaining 154

You can set the desired cooking temperature using the digital controller. You don’t have to babysit your grill. The auger will automatically calculate the amount of pellets required to cook at your desired temperature.

Oh, and not forgetting,  Traeger Grills TFB57PZBO Pro Series 22 comes with two different probes that let you monitor your smoking temperature on the go. I recommend this grill if you’re planning to cook different kinds of delicious food.

4. Traeger Grills Tailgater 20

The Tailgater series by Traeger can be described best with one word: portability.

If you want to enjoy the comfort and flavor of pellet smoking from a portable grill, then  Traeger Grills Tailgater 20 is a smart choice.

The 300 square inches cooking space isn’t large. I was able make up to 4 racks. I also cooked 2 chickens.

It weighs only 62 pounds, making it easy for you to transport. The hopper can hold up to 8 pounds. This allows you to cook for up to 6 hours without needing to refill.

It has foldable legs that allow you to transport your barbecue from one place to the next. You don’t have to sacrifice any other features with the portable feature. Traeger Grills Tailgater 20, for example, does not offer WIFI or other advanced features like the Ironwood, pro and Timberline pellet grills.

Even with that, I love the excellent performance of the grill and its capacity to smoke anywhere between 180-450°F.

It also includes a digital controller that allows you to maintain a consistent cooking temperature with 20 degree accuracy.

While charcoal grilling is a great option for camping, a pellet grill’s versatility is unbeatable. Pellet smokers offer incredible advantages, including the ability to grill, smoke, or bake.

5. Traeger Grills TFB38TCA Renegade Elite

Traeger Grills TFB38TCA Renegade Elite Wood Pellet Grill

The Renegade Elite is a rebel from Traeger. It measures 380 square inches and is slightly larger than the tailgate.

One thing I noticed during my best Trager pellet smoker review was that the product was designed to improve the quality of life, not look luxurious.

The front gate makes it easy to quickly load your grill. Plus, you don’t need a different side table anymore.

I love the Traeger series’ tool feature. For example, the included tool basket allows you to store all your grill accessories in one place. You can also put the scraper, fork and other accessories into your basket. That way, you won’t have to go here and there to take or store your accessories.

The hopper is easy-to-clean and maintain. To replace the pellets, I open the hatch at back and allow them to tumble out.

It makes it easy to change your pellet and literarily clean the hopper.  I also love the side grease drain.

6. Traeger Grills TFB38TOD Renegade Pro Pellet Grill & Smoke 380

Traeger Grills TFB38TOD Renegade Smoke 380 Sq. in. Cooking Capacity

Here’s another recommendation from the Renegade series – the Renegade Pro pellet grill.

Even with its top-notch features, I’m surprised to know that many BBQ lovers never looked into the direction of this Traeger grill.

When it comes to construction, I can compare this grill with the Tex Elite 22 (in fact, I think it’s better).

This product was made by Traeger using powder-coated steel. This ensures that it can withstand any harsh weather conditions and rough handling. It also has wheels that allow you to transport your grill almost anywhere.

However, the cooking area is small (around 380 square feet). You can still smoke 3 racks or 2 chickens and 12 burgers simultaneously.

Renegade Pro is sufficient enough for a small family of, let’s say, 3-4 members. And if there’s anything else I’m sold for about this grill, it’s the portable 6-1 functions that allow you to smoke, roast, grill, bake, barbecue, or braise anything on the go.

The digital pro controller also aids in the cooking process. It can be set at +/-15 degrees F.

However, I noticed that this unit doesn’t go well with extra accessories like drip trays or smoke racks.

I hope Traeger will address this issue.

You can cook up 5 racks of ribs, 4 chicken and 16 burgers in the 418 sq. inch cooking space.  The hopper can also hold 8 lb of pellets. You can grill for hours and not need to refill the hopper.

High-quality steel materials make the burner durable and last a long time. It comes with a digital controller that has your temperature maintained at the 20°F range. This controller makes it easier to control the temperature of the grill. You can cook food at a low temperature by switching between the slow and high settings. At a max temperature of 450°F, enjoy a consistent cooking experience.

Furthermore, it features a pro D2 direct drive controller, which comes at a range of 180-450°F to control the temperature of the grill.

Why Traeger smoker/grill is your best choice

This best Traeger smoker review will show you that these smokers can also be used as a grill and smoker. This makes it difficult to decide which one is better: a smoker, or a grill. So if you’re planning to both grill and smoke, I’ll recommend going for an excellent quality Traeger pellet smoker.

How to choose the best Traeger Smoker

It can be difficult to choose the right Traeger brand. I remember feeling intimidated by the different Traeger lines.

You must weigh all options before you can choose the best Traeger Grill. Here are some factors that I used to help me choose the best Traeger grill.

You will notice that most Traeger pellet barbecues have a 300-1300 sq. ft. area.

The bigger the size, the more expensive it is. Keep this in mind. If you are cooking for a large guest, then don’t consider a small size.

You may end up wasting more pellets or spending more money if your brand is too big. Also, you must consider the pellet hopper’s size.

Large hoppers can hold enough pellets and you will only need to refill it after extended use if necessary. I recommend buying a grill that is larger than your needs.

There are two types of buyers: those who want the grill to be stocked with the most recent tech and those who don’t care about tech but still prefer a grill that is high quality.

What features do you want and what can you do without?

Here are some features of pellet grills.

  • Wifi connectivity: Would you like to be connected to your Traeger pellet smoking machine from anywhere?
  • Searing- Some pellet grills do a great job smoking, but some are difficult to sear. That’s why most manufacturers added a searing feature as an attachment.
  • Portable feature- Would you prefer a Traeger grill that folds down? Think about how you might want to transport your grill.

All the factors discussed in this article play a role in determining its price.

Pellet grills are more expensive because they have better tech features. smokers.

You can buy one of the finest Traeger smokers starting at $400-$2000
